The Triathlon Racing Mindset
Doing a triathlon for the first time, or the tenth time, is a challenge nonetheless. Getting into the right mindset before the race can make or break your performance.
Why Are You Racing?
Think of why you decided to do this. For who did you promise to race today? Who is counting on you to finish strong? How hard did you work to come this far? How long have you been telling yourself that you can and will be a triathlete? Chances are, you have thought about these questions during your training. Tell yourself you’re invincible, and that the only thing holding you back is your mind. Look around at all the people you’re competing against. Know that even if you don’t finish before any of them, that you still got out and finished the race and that alone is a great show of strength.
Racing With a Team?
If you’re on a team, remind yourself that you are representing them too along with yourself. If you have a mantra that helps you finish tough workouts, repeat it in your head. Focus on reminding yourself that you can and you will finish the race, even if it takes all day and you’re the last person there. Triathlon is a sport about conquering your mind just as much as training your body. I can’t stress this enough. Even when you’re extremely tired, you can use sheer willpower to push yourself that last mile, unless of course something is actually wrong.
